As a first-tier cluster of discipline, the Library, Information and Archives Management of Renmin University of China, consists of five second-tier disciplines: Library Studies, Information Studies, Archival Studies, Information Resource Management and Information Analysis. In 1952, China’s first archival education enterprise was established by Renmin University of China. The professional education of archival studies including special college education, undergraduate education, master degree education and PhD degree education were all first built up in Renmin University of China. In 1993, the PhD Program was established, which is the only national key discipline in archival studies in China, and its discipline construction level ranked number one  in China. The construction of Information Studies Program of the Renmin University of China began in the early 1980s, and the discipline development focused on the social science information research. The Master Program of Information Studies was established in 2000, and the PhD Program of information studies was established in 2006. Scientific research achievements such as “Book Classification Method of the Renmin University of China” have had significant impacts on the construction of new China’s libraries and the development of library studies. The systematic professional education of library studies in the Renmin University of China began in the 1990s. The development of disciplines focuses on the construction of university libraries, the management of social science information and the research of digital library construction. In 1998, the Master Program of Library Studies was established; in 2006, the PhD program of Library Studies was established; in 2010, the Master Program of Library and Information Studies was established. Based on the needs of economic and social development and the trend of discipline innovation and development, the PhD Program and Master Program of the second-tier discipline Information Resource Management were added in 2009, and the PhD Program and Master Program ofthe second-tier discipline Information Analysis were added in 2012.The first-tier cluster of disciplines has formed six academic research directions that reflect the needs of economic and social development with their own characteristics, such as the basic theory of archival studies and the development and utilization of archival information resources, the theory and method of electronic records management, information organization and information construction, information analysis and consulting services, semantic knowledge organization and content-based academic evaluation, and government information resource management. The above research directions has decisive significance on the overall development of the clusters of discipline. In 2017, in the newly released  List of World-Class Universities and First-Class Disciplines Construction Plan (referred to as “double first-class universities and disciplines”), the school’s Library, Information and Archives Management was authorized in the first-class discipline construction list.

Under the construction of world-class universities and first-class disciplines, the first-tier clusters of discipline, the Library, Information and Archives Management at School of Information Resources Management (SIRM) has a history of 67 years old. It has a remarkable history and has comprehensive programs of various kinds at all levels. The SIRM is committed to training managers to know both technology and information disciplines well and building the discipline into a world-class universities and first-class disciplines having significant contributions to the world and having voices standing for China.
