Digital Memory Team Grabbed Attention in Berlin

Digital Memory Talents Growth Support Program (DMTGSP) in Renmin University of China has achieved great success since its launch in September 2016. In May 2017, the eight papers submitted by DMTGSP were received by the DCH2017 Interdisciplinary Conference on Digital Cultural Heritage in Germany and their authors received invitations to deliver talks. Professor Huiling Feng, Associate Professor Jihong Liang, Mr. Dan Wang, Ms. Qing Ma, Ms. Yifan Xiong, Dr. Xiaoshuang Jia and other members of Digital Memory Project in RUC attended the meeting.

DCH2017 Interdisciplinary Conference on Digital Cultural Heritage was sponsored by the International Scientific Consortium (ICSU) and Scientific Data Committee (CODATA). It is an important international conference on the protection of cultural heritage in the field of digital preservation. It was hosted by Germany National Library from August 30th to September 1st, 2017.

The meeting was chaired by H. Kremers. At the opening ceremony, Mr. Kremers, extended a warm welcome to the scholars attending the ceremony, with special thanks to the delegation of digital memory team from Renmin University of China. The conference is divided into two parallel venues to showcase the research frontiers and future trends of digital cultural heritage through seminars and lectures. It is a feast for science, technology and culture.

On the first day of the conference, Professor Huiling Feng and Dr. Xiaoshuang Jia were invited to report on "Visualization of Chinese genealogies with digital technology: A case of genealogy of Wu Clan in the village of Gaoqian”. Professor Huiling Feng briefed the participants on the genealogy of China and the background of the study. On the basis of this, Xiaoshuang Jia offered a path analysis of digital display of family tree by taking the example of "Family Tree of West Wu House", and argued that the digital display of family tree should combine the traditional method of ancient books collection and modern digital technology to reproduce the genealogical contents. During the Q & A session, Xiaoshuang Jia expressed her vision of the future of the research.

In the second session, Mr. Lichao Liu, one of the 2016 master students in the iSchool at RUC, delivered a talk on "Representing light and shade of old Beijing: Construction of historical picture display playform based on GIS”. In his speech, Lichao demonstrated the project team’s digital convergence results.

Associate Professor Jihong Liang was invited to give a keynote speech on "Visual representation of ancient Chinese rites with digitalization technology: A case of confucius worship ceremony". She first expounded the importance of the modern heritage of ancient Chinese rituals, and proposed that "modern digital technologies provide a technical means for recreating the ancient cultural legacy." She used digital animation techniques to restore the dance in the Confucian ceremonies of the Qing Dynasty, explaining the research ideas and current work to the participating scholars and emphasizing that the digital reproduction of the sacrificial ceremonies is an important study of heritage of human civilization.

On the afternoon of August 31, Ms. Jingzhi Fan, one of the 2015 Undergraduate students from iSchool at RUC, made a speech on "Recalling the pleasure of old Beijing: An interactive website of Beijing playthings". In her speech, she mentioned the status quo of the old Beijing plaything discovered by the team during the field study and introduced the page design, interaction performance, organizing methods of the old Beijing playthings. she stated that their goal is not only to present and protect the plaything in old Beijing, but to make it an important part of Beijing’s urban memory.
