On April 22nd, 2017, “International Conference on Trusting Records in the Networked Environment” was grandly opened in the second lecture hall of the Shaw Conference Center at Renmin University of China. Experts from home and abroad gathered.

Professor Jian Wang, ITrust Asia Team Leader from School of Information Resource Management, Renmin University of China presided over the conference and introduced the guests, including Mr. Hua Fu, the deputy head of State Archives Administration, Professor Huiling Feng, the General Counsel of ITrust Asia Team, Dr. Luciana Duranti, the director of InterPARIS, Ms. Corinne Rogers, the Chief Coordinator of ITrust, Ms. Lihua Huang, Director of Science and Technology in State Archives Administration, Mr. Haomin Huang, the Deputy Secretary General of China Archives Association, Professor Qinhua Xu, Director of Scientific Research Department of RUC, Prof. Zhang Bin, the dean of iSchool at RUC, the media guests and journalists and friends, academic staff and students from universities and religious followers.

Dr. Luciana Duranti, the director of InterPARIS and professor in University of British Columbia of Canada, summarized the InterPARIS. Online records and their trust issues in the Internet and cloud environments are the concerns. Professor Luciana pointed out that the trusting relationships in the Internet are risky and fragile, posing challenges to records management and storage in a rapidly changing technology environment where copyright, ownership and jurisdiction are all questioned, while trust is based on on a common interest-based system of specific interests. The research objective of the InterPARIS is to lay the groundwork for the establishment of a relationship of trust between individuals and institutions holding Internet data and records, to ensure that the data and records formed in the mutual communication of individuals and institutions are credible, and to establish a framework beyond national scope including developed countries, developing countries and regions. Professor Luciana also detailed the research areas and specific methods, and offered guidance on how to refer to the research results.

Corinne Rogers, InterPARES team co-ordinator, reported on the ITrust research. She put forward the goal of exploring how existing institutions and professionals’ current policies and practices in digital records management affect their public trust in the cyber environment. She proposed the trust problems of digital records in institutions that are experiencing decreased public trust, and the impacts of national or cultural backgrounds on the level of trust enjoyed by online digital records. She recommended a clear policy, practice and procedural model for creating, managing, accessing and / or storing online records, especially its applicability in social media and mobile technologies cloud computing environment. Professor Corinne Rogers introduced ITrust’s current research results, including EU08 – Ensuring Storage Trust (EN, SP) in IaaS (EU) – EU15 – Single Sign On System List, NA03 – Archives Practices Standards, NA06 – Functional Requirements for Detention and Disposal in a Cloud Environment and NA14 – Evaluation Checklist for Cloud Service Provider Contracts (EN, SP, FR, NL).

Ms. Eun G. Park, researcher in ITrust Team North America and Associate Professor in School of Information Studies, McGill University, reported on “Assessment of Privacy-preserving and Security Techniques for Records Management in Cloud Computing”. She made a detailed analysis of her research on privacy management and information security of records management in cloud computing along the lines of goals, methodology, legal perspectives, technical perspectives, case studies, results of case studies and suggestions. In order to manage the security and privacy risks of records and data management in cloud environment, governments and health institutions should be cautious in using cloud services. Users should use appropriate strategies to protect information privacy. The public should realize that existing strategies may reveal private information.

Professor Sherry L. Xie, one of the Co-Directors in ITrust Team Asia, and Deputy Director of Center for Digital Records Management Research and iSchool at RUC, reported on how to protecting personal data. Her presentation compared China’s and EU’s practice on privacy and personal data protection. First, the concept of privacy and personal data was explained in an all-round way, followed by an overview of the EU’s and China’s practices and special attention to the online environment. She also analyzed the privacy and personal information in China, the EU’s relevant laws and provisions of the presentation and the differences. Her analysis was mainly about the definitions of the "personal data" and "personal information" in the two laws, namely the General Data Protection Ordinance (EU) and the National Security Act (China), by analyzing their similarities and differences, and raised the needs to further explore the issue.

Mr. Yingfang Cai, Researcher in ITrust Team Asia, and the Director of Economic and Scientific Archives Division, State Archives of Administration of China, reported to the conference on “Electronic records management policies and standards mechanism in digital e-commerce”.

Mr. Yun Fang, researcher in ITrust Team Asia and the director of Archives of the City of Tianjian, delivered a talk on “Case study on archival institutions as a trusted third party in maintaining and protecting electronic records”.

Ms. Manying Nie, researcher in ITrust Team Asia, and the director of the Institute of Scientific and Technical Research on Archives，State Archives Administration of China, presented on the title of “Identification of risk factors of digital archives projects”.

Dr. Wenhong Zhou, researcher in InterPARES Trust Team Asia and Assistant Professor in School of Public Administration, Sichuan University, presented his research findings on “Problems and solutions: Research on the management of digital records of online public participation”.

Mr. Shuangcheng Liu, Coordinator in ITrust Team China and in the International Cooperation Division, State Archives Administration of China, shared his ideas on security and confidentiality of electronic records relying on cloud Services.

Dr. Ning Zhang, researcher in ITrust Team Asia and Associate Professor in iSchool at RUC, delivered a talk on contract terms with cloud service providers from the viewpoint of records management.

Ms. Guanyan Fan, one of the research assistant in ITrust Team Asia and the Ph.D. student in iSchool at RUC, made a speech on rules concerning electronic evidence in digital environments.

Ms. Sevgi Koyuncu Tunc, one of the Ph.D. candidates in the Department of Information Management, Hacettepe University in Turkey, and Microsoft Partner Software Consultant, reported on her views on evaluation of usability and human-computer interaction of electronic document management systems.
