iSchool@RUC Convened the 4th Ph.D. Forum on Archives Studies

    The 4th Ph.D. Forum on Archives Studies, sponsored by the School of Information Resource Management in Renmin University of China, was held in the second conference room of the Shaw Hall from October 28th to 29th, 2017. The theme of this forum is "Inheritance and Development of Chinese Archival Science." This forum is also one of the important activities to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the founding of the School of Information Resources Management (Archives) of Renmin University of China.     On the afternoon of the 28th, the forum officially opened. The opening ceremony was Chaired by Professor Bin Zhang, the Dean of School of Information Resource Management (the former School of Archives) of Renmin University of China. In his speech, Mr. Shuquan Zheng, deputy party secretary of Renmin University of China, highly affirmed the value of the Doctoral Forum. He pointed out that the archival cause of our country is in a crucial period and the thirst for archive knowledge and talents is more intense than ever before. The discipline of Library, Information and Archives Management has just been selected by the Ministry of Education into a "Double-top-class" construction list in 2017. It is necessary to seize this opportunity to take root in China’s mainland universities and strive to build a world-class university and a first-class discipline for the prosperity of China’s higher education, and to make new and greater contributions to realizing the goal of "Two 100 years" and realizing the Chinese dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

    Mr. Hua Fu, deputy director of the State Archives Administration and deputy director of the Central Archives, said in his speech that the doctoral forum is a high-level, distinctive and influential academic platform. This forum is an important academic conference to discuss inheritance and development of archives from a new starting point after the successful convening of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. It has the important significance of adhering to the past and going from the past to the future. He encouraged archivists to broaden their horizons and broaden their thinking under new challenges and new opportunities. They carried out studies on the key, hot issues, difficulties and frontier issues in China’s archives studies, and innovated and prospered China’s archives studies in succession.

    The first session of the forum focused on the history and current status of archival studies in China. It was chaired by Professor Caifu Li, the Dean of School of Management at Anhui University. The commentators were Professor Hongjie Hu, School of Information Resource Management, Renmin University of China, and Professor Qiuhui Xiao, School of Information Management, Wuhan University. Dr. Xinxin Xu from Zhengzhou University, Dr. Biyong Tan from Shandong University, Dr. Wenting Lu from Nanjing University, Dr. Zhiying Lian from Shanghai University and Dr. Feng Zhou from Shanghai University reported on the following topics,
The development of archives studies from the archives meeting: The history of combing and thematic analysis from 1981 to 2004,
Preparation of "National Archives Movement" during Nanjing National Government,
Review on research paradigm of archives studies on the basis of contemporary philosophy of science,
Crisis of archives studies in contemporary China and higher education development, hardships and responsibilities,
Their presentations evoke discussions on archives studies’ value for social problems, discipline confidence of archives studies, and the impacts of logical order and logic laws of historical events on the movement of Nanjing National Archives.
 
     The theme of the second phase was the interaction between theory and practice of Chinese archives. It was chaired by Professor Bo Jin, Director of Department of Library, Information and Archives, Shanghai University, and was commented on by Professor Liui Xue, Director of Institute of Library, Information and Archives, National Chengchi University, and Professor Yingwei Wang, School of Information Resource Management, Renmin University of China. Dr. Changle Tang from Wuhan University, Dr. Jing Yan from Renmin University of China, Dr. Yufan Wu from National Taiwan University of Political Science and Law, Dr. Dailong Xiao from Sun Yat-sen University, and Dr. Shiyi Xie from Suzhou University reported on the following topics,
The Core Values ​​of Source Principles and Their Metadata Implementation,
Enlightenment of postmodern archival science thoughts on the development of archives theory and practice in China,
Disclosure of the reform of the archives management system in modern China: The revelation and influence of the review conference on the treatment of official documents in China,

Out of "ivory tower" and "demarcation": On the "disjoint" between theory and practice of Chinese archives.
Subsequently, the speakers engaged in enthusiastic interactions with the audience on the question whether there is a disconnect between theory and practice in archives studies and how to achieve the core values ​​of the principle of origin.
 
    On the morning of the 29th, the theme of the third phase was the protection and development of the archival resources in China. Professor Zhen He, vice president of Hunan Urban Institute chaired the session. Professor Haibin Ding from History College in Liaoning University and Professor Xiaoyu Huang from School of Information Resource Management in Renmin University of China were the commentators. Dr. Yingfang Cai, Director of the Department of Economic and Technological Archives in State Archives Administration, Mr. Xu Yuan, one of the Ph.D. candidates from Renmin University of China, Dr. Yanling Pan from Hebei University, Dr. Jujian Zhao from Yunnan University and Dr. Chen Jian from Shandong University reported on the following topic,
Construction of Chinese characteristic enterprise archives theory,
Research on the openness and utilization of archives of science and technology research in China,
Public participation in archival protection of intangible cultural heritage in the Later Epoch Times,
Research on the protection of oral archives of ethnic minorities in Yunnan Province from the perspective of ecological and cultural changes of ethnic cultures,
Archives cooperative governance model based on discretion sharing.
Professor Li-gui Xue raised questions to the speakers on such issues as embodiment of the theory of archives with Chinese characteristics, and collection units and preservation units of the oral records of ethnic minorities in Yunnan.
 
    The theme of the final stage of this forum is the future opportunities and challenges of China’s archives industry. It was chaired by Professor Yuenan Liu, the Associate Dean of School of Information Resource Management in Renmin University of China. Professor Jianhua Wu, the Associate Dean of School of Information Management in Nanjing University, and Professor Renjie Ma from School of Management in Anhui University were the commentators. Dr. Wenhong Zhou from Sichuan University, Dr. Xiaoqiang Jia from Renmin University of China, Dr. Zongfu Li from Zhengzhou University, Dr. Wei Liu from Yunnan University, and Dr. Dawei Chang from Wuhan University respectively reported on the following topics,
Review and prospect: Analysis of the dimension of digital transformation in records management,
Analysis of the current situation and trend of private archives,
Design and management of archives volunteer services in new media environment: Based on the "five in one" functional perspective,
Research on the co-construction and sharing of archives information resources in semantic web,
The history, characteristics and developing trend of archival informatization construction in China: Text analysis based on the reports of the State Archives Administration Director Meeting from 1979 to 2016.
After the presentations, the topics of genealogy preservation, private archives construction and other issues were discussed among the attendants.
 
    The closing and presentation ceremony was presided over by Professor Yuenan Liu. The Archives Doctoral Forum received a total number of 41 papers, of which 20 papers were short-listed qualifications. After the evaluation of invited experts, three papers won the first prize, seven papers won the second prize, and ten papers won the third prize. Finally, Professor Huiling Feng, Professor Lizhu Guo, and Professor Li-gui Xue awarded the winners.

    Professor Huiling Feng summed up the Ph.D. forum. She believed that the topic of the doctoral forum is more extensive. The young and the talented people have a wide range of horizons. Archives studies research should be based on the correct positioning of time and space, and scholars should take the initiative to embrace the times, with a sense of the times involved in the study. Finally, Professor Feng thanked all staff for their contributions and investment in this forum and encouraged them to strengthen exchanges and collisions. She also called for the Ph.D. students group to strengthen their alliances and make unique contributions so that archives studies can survive vigorously.

    The 4th Ph.D. Forum on Archives Studies summarizes the ancient and modern experiences of archives studies and integrates the essence of archival studies both at home and abroad, and provides a high level of academic exchange platform for Ph.D. recipients and doctoral students in archives studies in China.
