Create Digital Memory Enrich International Exchanges

On September 26th The lecture Archives in the 21st Century: The Creation of Digital Memory was held in Renmin University,which was given by three invited scholars from the Department of Special Collections and Archives at Queens College: Ben Alexander, assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies at Queens College, Natalie Milbrodt, director of the Queens Memory Project and Annie Tummino, director of the Queens College Civil Rights Archive. Doc. Ben Alexander provided an overview of evolving perspective of "digital memory" in the United States.  Project Directors Natalie Milbrodt and Annie Tummino explored the origins of thier digital projects and explains the on-going strategies of their creation and development. 

Professor Wang Jian made a short introductionand of the lecturers and vice-president Feng Huiling gave an openning speech during which her warm welcome and great interests of their projects were shown. Then Doctor Ben Alexander started with some basic information of Queen’s College Memory Projects, providing background knowlege to the audiences. In his presentation powerpoint, some old pictures were shown,including a photo of Apple’s origins, representing precious memories of Queens community that saved digitally as well as spread through the network.

After that Natalie Milbrodt introduced the Queens Memory Project which aims at conserving the culture divirsity in this community by making them into valuable archives. She elaborated the seven project stages in detail, including identification, ducumentation, selection,arrangement,etc.

Then Annie Tummino, as the director of the Civil Rights Movement Archives, presented the origin of the civil rights movement archives that cover from personal manuscript to articrafts and provided some worth-learning experince such as using free software as well as the simple Dublin Core metadata to build up archival websites and recruiting interns to carry out the program in oder to cut the budget.

At the end of the lecture, there came the interaction between lecturers and audiences. They exchanged ideas about the topic and expressed  their admiration to each other.

After the lecture, three guests were invited to visit laboratories in the School of Information Resource Management, including data engineering and  knowledge engineering laboratory and Cache Safe Technology laboratory and they spoke highly of the excellent equipments as well as the leading researches.

Soon after their visiting, the guests had a friendly and cheerful communication with Ji Hongbo, the school Party Secretary, professor Zhang Jian and professor Wang Jian. They discussed memory projects by comminuty units thoroughly and reached a common understanding that those projects could produce good social and cultural effects. Finally, thay had a discussion on international exchange and cooperation intention from which both of them gained new thoughts and great impression.
