Digital Memory International Forum was staged by iSchool at RUC

RUC Digital Memory Forum and the 5th China Electronic Records Management Forum were held in the Lecture Hall of Sinology Institute at Rennin University of China from October 24th to 25th, 2015. The main theme of the forum was “Digital memory: Construction, identification, and inheritance”. Keynotes and presentations were delivered by scholars, sponsors and implementors of over 20 outstanding digital memory projects in China and abroad.

Importing high-definition multimedia technology, over 30 specialists and scholars from P.R. China, Singapore, the Netherlands, the UK, South Korea and other countries shared their points of view in the cutting edges in the field. A special exhibition was also held by hardware and software suppliers and resource developers.



 Yulu Chen, Chancellor of RUCMinghua Li, Director of the State Archives Administration of P.R. China, and Xiangwu Wang, Head of Beijing Planning Office of Philosophy And Social Science attended the forum and delivered celebrating speech respectively. Other attendees included Hua Fu, Minister of Technology of SAAC, and Dinghua Zhang, Director of Ministerial Joint Conference of National Electronic Records.

Representatives of central and local governments , enterprises and institutions , archives , colleges and universities , software producers attended the conference. Branch venues were creatively offered for students through the Internet and Campus TV.







On the morning of October 24th, Professor Huiling Feng, the first keynote speaker, presented a speech titled “Landscape of Memory in the Digital Era”.

Then the Director of The Memory Movements of Singapore and The Memory Palace of the Netherlands introduced their experiences and best practices to the attendees. Main access to the national memory’s construction and inheritance has developed a dependence on society and the information field to gather the memory resources.

China Memory Presentation

   On the afternoon of October 24th, the forum topics concentrated on the memory of districts and cities . An English application called Hidden Newcastle and the Digital Resource Base of Beijing Memory uncovered adequate experiences of using Archives to build city memory. As the Representatives of Archives of all levels , Shanghai Archives and Zhejiang Archives showed respectively their achievements on district memory construction.

Novel forms like video reports and micro-reports were used to lead the audience to skim the colorful contents of digital memory projects in China and abroad. Many projects were full of local features, presented by micro films and virtual formats and distinguished by creativity, therefore stimulated our inspiration on city memory.

On the morning of October 25th , the focus was shifted to digital development of memory resources and applications of new media. The abundant experiences from Digital Archives Project of Taiwan stimulated the attendees’ hot discussions on digital memory. Later, the Digital Resource Base of China Old Records Project and Digital Dunhuang Project enabled the audience to feel deeply the non-negligible meaning of resource digitization and visualization. The development of cultural heritage digitization application by China Central Academy of Fine Arts created a new dimension for the attendees.

Digital memory at your fingertips

Making fully use of digital applications and social media to advocate the public to participate in constructing and strengthening community identification, memory organizations are producing new methods and tools for inheriting the ancient culture in digital era.

The discussion about digital memory was far from the end. So On the afternoon, a paralleled meeting of the forum was held in the School of Information Resource management at RUC, and attracted a group of attendees interested in digital memory and social media. 









RUC Digital Memory and The 5th China Electronic Document Management Forum is a stage built by Beijing Culture Research Center of RUC , Electronic Records Management Center of RUC and the School of Information Resource management of RUC. The forum strengthens communication of scholars, practitioners, relevant organizations and projects from home and abroad, promotes the maturation of digital memory theories and methods, push forwards the practical activities of digital memory. Importing high-definition multimedia, branch venues and other advanced technologies, the forum combines archives practice and digital technology to provide the attendees an abundant and wonderful feast on digital memory.
