10th International Joint Conference on Knowledge Discovery, Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management (IC3K 2018) was held from September 18 to 21, 2018 at the University of Seville, Spain. Prof. Li Xie, Associate Prof. Ming REN and her doctoral student Siyi LI and master student Guang Xu were invited to participate the conference and give speeches. The purpose of the IC3K is to bring together researchers, engineers and practitioners on the areas of Knowledge Discovery, Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management. IC3K is composed of three co-located conferences, each specialized in at least one of the aforementioned main knowledge areas. Prof. XIE was invited to report in the IC3K 2015. This year, Prof. Xie was invited by the organizers and elected as the chair of Special Session on Managing Digital Data, Information and Records: Firm Response to Hard Technologies – FR-HT 2018 of the KDIR conference. Prof. Yuenan Liu, Prof. Menghui Yang, Associate Prof. Tian XIA and Manying Nie, researcher of National Archives Administration of China served as judges at the Special Session.
The Special Session was based on Prof. Xie’ s project “Record-centered digital information management theory and methodology research” funded by National University Research Fund (No. 15XNL032). The project focuses on the management of records and information in the digital environment, rooted in the basic theory of record management, systematically and in-depth research on the theory, methods, mechanisms and systems of institutional records and information management in the unpredictable technological environment. The special session aims to explore the potential impact of the growing information technology on people's lives and the range of legal and social issues that may arise from the field of records, archives and information.
The special session FR-HT held by Prof. Xie was held from 9:00 to 12:00 on the second day of the conference. Prof. XIE introduced the pan-information system project and invited experts from the fields of information technology and information systems, law and public administration to work together. In addition, Professor XIE gave an academic report on the topic "Looking into Big Data: The Case of the US Federal Government" at the KMIS conference on the morning of the third day, which received wide attention. The study integrated the existing big data concept to build a theoretical analysis framework, collected and encoded relevant data such as big data-related projects and initiatives implemented by the US federal government, and thus uses the concept of big data.
Master student Guang Xu guided by Prof. Ren gave a report on "Comparing China's Self-image and Western Media Projected Image: From the Perspective of Davos Forum", pointing out that the paper is different from most previous studies on the image of the country. The method of calculating the national image, and showing the use of text abstracts and other technologies to extract the image of China and contribute to the study of national image.
Ph.D student Siyi Li made two reports. The first report was "Study on Relationships between Government Integrity and Digital Records Management: A Chinese Case", which aims to explore the relationship between China's government integrity construction and electronic document management through policy text analysis. The second report "Making Better out of Technology: Responses of InterPARES to Digital Records Management Challenges" was written by another Ph.D student Guanyan Fan. It summarized the deployment and adjustment of the InterPARES project team in response to the challenges of digital record management in different technical contexts and how traditional record management major (e.g. archival science) conform to the digital age.
The special session provided an international platform to show the research results of our school, which promoted the attention of researchers in the fields of information systems, information technology and knowledge management, and reflected the high academic level and interdisciplinary level of teachers and students in our school.
