The Fifth National Information Science Academic Forum for Doctoral Students Staged at RUC

The Fifth National Information Science Academic Forum for Doctoral Students and 2015 Information Resource Management Forum of China were held in the lecture hall of School of IRM at RUC on October 17th, 2015. The forum was co-organized by Journal of the China Society for Scientific and Technical Information, Information and Documentation Service journal press, Information Science journal press and Chinese Journal of Library and Information Science.

The forum theme was “the innovation and development of information science in big data and the Internet era”. Attendees made deep discussions on information science theories and strategies in big data and the Internet, information organization, information retrieval, information analysis, ecological environment construction of information and competitive intelligence. The forum was aimed to heighten the academic exchange platform for doctoral students.


Professor Liming Wang, Vice Chancellor of RUC, Professor Huilin Feng, Vice Director of Academic Committee of RUC, Zhiyun Zhao, secretary of the party committee of ISTIC, Professor Jianjun Sun, Dean of School of Information Management of Nanjing University, Professor Guangjian Li, Director of Department of Information Management of Peking University attended and delivered opening speeches. Changzhu Huang, academician of CASS, Professor Chuanfu Chen, Dean of Graduate School of Wuhan University, Professor Yuefeng Wang, Vice Director of Department of Information Management of Nanjing University of Science and Technology were invited to made keynote speeches. Professor Junping Qiu, Changping Hu, Maosheng Lai and other fifty professors and seventy doctoral students from Wuhan University, Peking University, Nanjing University, Renmin University of China ect. presented at the conference. The opening ceremony was hosted by Professor Zhang Bin, Dean of School of IRM at RUC.

First of all, Liming Wang delivered speech of welcome, and emphasized the positive influences of the forum. Broadening the field of information science on the premise of the subject feature could contribute to the development of information science and the education of students with good information management ability. Professor Wang expressed his earnest expectation on doctoral students.






Professor Huilin Feng encouraged doctoral students to seek for bigger progresses when facing with challenges to improve themselves in her speech. She also pointed out that new motivation was necessary for information science study in the age of big data and the Internet. 






Researcher Zhiyun Zhao also stressed on the positive meaning of the forum and considered it a good platform for the application and practice of theories. Professor Jianjun Sun expressed his hope for the future of the forum. He also hoped that one day the forum would be an international one aimed at studying cutting-edge fields and innovation. Professor Guangjian Li emphasized strengthening academic exchanges, broadening academic vision, stimulating academic thinking and setting up a platform of freedom for academic learning.






The keynote speech session was hosted by Professor. Xiaobin Lu, Associate Dean of of School of IRM at RUC. Professor Changzhu Huang reported on development and term censorship of library and information science. The keynote speech systematically presented the background and basic situation of term censorship work in library and information science, the effects of the Internet environment on the LIS filed like term using confusion and mess of discipline names. He proposed some practical solutions to these problems .

 

Professor Chuangfu Chen made a report titled “Exploration and thinking on the public policy of big data governance”. He started with cases of big data application and analyzed the importance of information management. He also introduced the reality and main fields of big data application in China and discussed several existing problems. Professor Chen argues that big data application matters policy making and China should make a series of policies on big data opining, cost socialization, big data security, property right change, competition inspiration and legal social obligation, to assure the efficiency and compliance of big data application. 






Professor Yuefeng Wang presented on re-thinking of research in Library and Information Science in big data era. In her report , Professor Wang systemically analyzed the needs and challenges we are facing. She revealed key points and projects on Library and Information Science by quantitative analysis and knowledge. She also explained some key technologies and application in detail and set up a academic research system for Library and Information Science in the age of big data. It provided a clear technical routine for the field.





At the following sub-sessions, attendees and doctoral students presented and discussed eleven topics including Information Science theories and strategies, information organization and retrieval, information management system and technology, construction and development of information management science in big data, theories and strategies of competitive intelligence, theories and practice of information analysis, information service in big data, information resource development, information users study, information measurement and evaluation .










Sixty-one papers were received in the forum and two papers won the first prize, six are awarded the second prize and ten the third prize. Professor Maosheng Lai from Department of Information Management of Peking University,Professor Junping Qiu and Changping Hu from School of Information Management of Wuhan University presented certificates for the award-winning doctoral students.





The closing ceremony was hosted by Professor Xiaoying Zhou on the morning of October 18th. Professor Maosheng Lai delivered closing speech. He appreciated highly of the achievements of the forum and praised the close connection between social developments and the forum, and creativity of the submissions. He emphasized in his speech that in the age of the Internet and big data, Information Science should concentrate on the directions of the society and key problems to make achievements with high standard, high levels and high meanings. He also encouraged doctoral students to keep good balances between learning and research, inheritance and innovation in order to improve their academic cultivation and standards.   

National Information Science Academic Forum for Doctoral Students is a academic exchange stage for Library and Information Science doctoral students to improve academic learning, show themselves, learn from others’ strong points and close the gap. The success of the forum has essential meaning for Information Science research, development and professionals education.
